Spaced Soothing for upto 3 months
(next month on the baby secrets website spaced soothing 3-7 months)
Give your baby 5 minutes to wind down when you put her in her cot. You need to give her the opportunity to fall asleep on her own. She will reach the peak of her crying in 5 minutes. If after that there is gaps of quiet then your baby is trying to fall asleep on her own, please don’t go in and disturb her as you will be confirming to her she cannot fall asleep on her own.
Wait 1 minute then go in put lie her down and put your hand on her chest 'ssshhh' her for maximum 1 minute. If your baby does not respond to this then lift her out of the cot and put her over your shoulder and ssshhh her. Do this for 1 minute until her cries are calming or stopped. Then lie her back down put your hand firmly on her chest, stroke her down her nose, do all this until she is calm and leave the room.
Then wait 2 minutes. Do not go in if there are quiet parts. Go in and soothe exactly what you did before.
Wait 3 minutes. Then do exactly the same as above.
Wait 4 minutes. Then soothe as before.
Wait 5 minutes.
Then continue going in every 5 minutes after that. At any point your baby is getting hysterical then go in and soothe her before the 5 minutes are up. |
Continue this until your baby settles. Many parents find that it is actually better for their baby if they are left longer in between before they go in as their babies seem to get more upset each time they go in and then it takes longer to settle them. So some mums leave them for 5 minutes before going into them. I agree that some babies do get very cross if someone goes in too often .And sometimes it is better to wait longer. But listen to your baby and then you can decide what will work best for you. Listen out for the quiet spaces in between the crying, they are very important as they are your babies way of telling you that they are trying to go to sleep on their own.
Rules
Do not leave your baby to cry for longer than 10 minutes at anytime. Your baby will get too distressed.
Only soothe for 1 minute any longer and your baby will think that you are going to do something and therefore you are only teasing them.
Listen for the quiet parts and do not go in if there are any your baby is trying to go to sleep herself.
If at any point your baby is getting too distressed then go in and soothe them do not wait for the 5 minutes.
Be consistent make sure you do exactly the same thing each time you go into your baby.
Continue these methods daytime and night time sleeps so your baby is not confused.
Follow this plan for at least 7 days, night 3 and 4 are usually the worst, this is when most parents give up. I think your baby knows this! So be strong!
Always give your baby kisses and tickles and make a big fuss when she wakes after falling asleep on her own. This reassures her and also gives her happy feelings about her cot .
Never be tempted to give into your baby and start feeding or rocking her to sleep once she has learnt how to do it on her own. Next time you try and sleep train her she will be wise to you and it will be much harder!
In the daytime if she won’t settle after half an hour get her up, and try again an hour later. But please try and persevere.
Each day is a new day and a new start. If yesterday was difficult then today is another chance to get it right! Your baby will thank you!
